Success in Computer Science at DePaul University
The computer science industry is growing much faster than average, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. From 2019 to 2029, there is a 15% growth projected for computer and information research jobs. What does this mean for your students? A career in computer science has a promising future, especially when students choose to prepare for that industry with a degree from DePaul University. Excellence in Academics
Located in the School of Computing within DePaul’s College of Computing and Digital Media, the Computer Science degrees are available for undergraduate and graduate students, with studies available through the Global Gateway Program and by direct admission. Watch this video of Professor Amber Settle to hear about DePaul’s Computer Science programs.
The Bachelor of Science (BS) and Master of Science (MS) in Computer Science degrees are STEM Designated Degree Programs and completing either degree may qualify international students to extend their post-graduation stay in the USA through Optional Practical Training (OPT).
Of the undergraduate students in the Computer Science BS program, 59% complete an internship while at DePaul. The program gives students the opportunity to gain essential training in the foundations of computing, data storage, and information processing, and they can choose from concentrations in Game Systems and Software Development. Students explore aspects of mathematics, science, and engineering while learning about human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and computational finance.
Postgraduate students who enroll in the MS in Computer Science program learn the fundamentals of the field, explore programmatic applications, and can research topics like data mining and scientific computing. They can focus on artificial intelligence, data science, database systems, game and real-time systems, human-computer interaction, software and systems development, software engineering, and theory. Students who do not have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science do have the opportunity to enroll in the MS program and will take preparation courses as part of their studies to give them the academic background for their graduate studies. Innovation and Research
The College of Computing and Digital Media houses more than 20 laboratories and research centers for students to conduct hands-on learning with faculty members and on their own. Many projects pursued by DePaul’s Computer Science faculty are funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and other agencies. Areas of research include artificial intelligence, computational finance, data mining, database systems, high performance and scientific computing, human-computer interaction, programming languages and systems, security, software engineering, technology education, theory, and visual computing.
Career Success
Graduates from DePaul’s Computer Science programs have gone on to work at Microsoft, the Federal Reserve Bank, JP Morgan Chase, Navteq, and WMS Industries, among other well-recognized companies. Studying in this field prepares students for careers in industries as varied as software, advertising/marketing, education, banking/financial, and healthcare. DePaul Computer Science graduates have reported impressive median salaries within six months of graduation:
- $66,996 for BS graduates
- $78,000 for MS graduates
