Your students may be intimidated by the thought of planning for their careers, but James Madison University provides the support to help them on this journey.
JMU University Career Center
The JMU University Career Center gives access to services like
- Major and career exploration
- Support for job and internship searches
- Preparation for graduate school
- Access to Handshake, the JMU job search portal
- Guidance from peer advisors
Students can receive help in developing their resumes, practising their skills in mock interviews, and building their professional portfolios. With in-person, phone, email, and Zoom appointments, the staff will answer questions and provide valuable industry knowledge for career planning. Also, there are plenty of virtual workshops for students to attend so that they can refine their skills. The University Career Center will even help students take a professional headshot to add to their LinkedIn profiles.
The University Career Center offers a Campus-Wide Career Fair and fairs that are specific to their chosen majors. For example, The Hart School led a virtual career fair on March 3, 2021 for students majoring in hospitality management and sport and recreation management. Students have a chance to meet with employers in virtual, 1:1 appointments to learn about careers in this industry.
iCareer
JMU’s International Student Services is available to answer questions on a 1:1 basis and through special programming with iCareer. This programme will helps students build their career strategies with unique sessions choosing the right major, knowing their academic strengths, creating their resumes, and working on or off campus. The second half of iCareer will help students learn more about Optional Practical Training (OPT), work visas, employment options, and graduate school possibilities.
GoinGlobal Access
GoinGlobal is an online job search platform for students to use in searches for jobs in the U.S., in your home country, or in a new country of your choice. This tool will help students find information about local and country locations, how different countries conduct business, and what jobs are available worldwide. Students will find networking opportunities and have access to U.S. companies that have sponsored work visas in the past.
Course in Career and Academic Planning
When your students enrol at the International Study Center, they can take JMU’s Career and Academic Planning course. This course will benefit them for learning how to
- Talk about personal strengths that will impact degree programming and career decisions
- Find academic and job resources to use in searches
- Gain decision-making and goal-setting strategies
Students will take a course called Pathways to Success every semester that they are enrolled in the ISC. Pathways to Success teaches them how to be career ready with experiences to help with communication, professionalism, and organisation skills. Pathways to Success classes participate in many activities like creating elevator pitches, learning about leadership styles, developing project plans for fundraisers, and many others.
International Student Leadership Conference
The Center for Global Engagement hosts the International Student Leadership Conference (ISLC) at JMU. During this conference, globally minded students network with others and build their leadership skills. Students can lead and attend sessions focused on a variety of global topics, and ISLC is open to students throughout Virginia, Maryland, and the Washington, D.C. area. The Spring 2021 ISLC event will be virtual, giving more students the opportunity to attend!
